Hello

Hello,
My name is Steven Devers. I am originally from Michigan, I moved to Western Kentucky when I was in elementary school and lived there until we moved to Cape Girardeau two years ago. I have not decided on a major yet, I am working on a general studies degree in the meantime so I can do it all online.
My wife and I have three children, ages eight, three and two.  We don't care for the daycare systems, or for paying exorbinant amounts for it, we would homeschool our children if we could.  So, she goes to work during the day while I stay home with the kids.  We both go to SEMO, my Freshman year, her Junior year.  I went back to school last year, but couldn't finish due to kid problems, car problems and everything in between. I decided to go back online only this semester, and figured it would be easier to get class work done if I wasn't required in class. This is a big challenge for us, to keep our household running successfully, while each trying to make the best life for our kids as possible.
I am not sure what I expect to get out of this class yet. I have always liked writing, so I don't think I will be disappointed, I guess I hope to get better at being a writer. If this class is anything like the English class my wife took, I am already somewhat familiar with the coursework, but I hope to get practice writing academic papers.

  1. Steven, I'm glad you learned from your previous experiences with juggling classes, family, and life, and I hope the online courses allow you the flexibility to thrive this time around!

  2. I know what you mean by balancing it all. Scheduling and organization are key in our home. I applaud your desire to educate your children at home. It was the best decision that me and my husband made for our family. There are many resources that are inexpensive that can help you get started. We have a local home school co-op based in Cape that has been a great support for our family. Our co-op has over 200 students enrolled at any given semester. I have one child in fifth grade and two in second. This semester I am considered a full time student at SEMO and have my own house cleaning business. I just wanted to encourage you and your wife to follow your hearts in the desired education for your children. It can be done, it may take some extra planning and organization but it is so rewarding and worth every minute! I don't want to paint it as perfect because it's also hard to put on an additional hat as a parent and become a full time teacher as well. Best wishes on your college journey and blessings to your family.

  3. Thanks, Mr. Sentell. I am still learning how to balance everything out, but am getting better at it!
Jeniese, my wife and I discussed homeschooling again the other day. We only have one in school right now, our oldest who is eight, and she adores school. She was complaining half the summer about being out on break! I think we have decided instead of having our children completely homeschooled, that we will supplement their education by adding work at home. We did this once when we moved Emma from a different school district, and found that she was behind, we would give her homework from us each night, and she did well with it. No offense to the public education system, but I feel that there is a lot that the schools do not teach children, so we hope to add on to our children's knowledge by working with them outside of mandatory school work. Also, I think my wife might kill me if I don't go back to work once they all turn five! Best of luck to you!
